Arts Education Month. May is Arts Education Month in the State of Washington. It is a time to increase public awareness of the importance of quality arts education for every student, in every school. Passed by Congress in 2010, House Resolution 275 designates the week beginning with the second Sunday in September as National Arts in Education Week. During this week, the field of arts education joins together in communities across the country to tell the story of the impact of the transformative power of the arts in education. Arts Education Month is more than symbolic.

March is one of my favorite months of the year—it’s National Arts in Education Month —or, as we call it more colloquially, Arts in the Schools Month! Join the Ohio Arts Council (OAC) and Ohio Department of Education in celebrating the arts in schools all month long. We know that a quality education that includes the arts provides skills and knowledge that every student needs to be successful in and out of school. Ohio’s arts education data tells a story of success for Ohio’s children. The Art & Creative Materials Institute (ACMI) created Children’s Art Month in 1961 as an event to emphasize the value to children from participating in visual art education. In 1969 the celebration expanded to include secondary school students, and the Children’s Art Month event officially became known as Youth Art Month.
