Her famous quilt, Tar Beach, resides at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York. Ringgold also works in many other media, such as the notable mosaic for the New York subway system at 125th Street in Harlem, where she grew up and taught for many years, bringing the proud history of African‐American masters to a new generation. We read the books Tar Beach by Faith Ringgold and Cassie’s Word Quilt (Amazon Affiliate links). We talked about the design elements of Faith Ringgold’s work and how she makes stories and artwork based on things she has experienced her life and community. She perceives bridges as being divisive ‘masculine’ structures, just as quilts are traditionally affiliated with women. The George Washington Bridge is used frequently in the background and story of the series,Tar Beach I and II. Tar Beach was Ringgold’s first published book, and it has won more than 30 awards, including the coveted Caldecott Honor and Coretta Scott King award for best illustrated children’s book of 1991. Ringgold later went on to complete sixteen other children’s books, and her own personal memoir, We Flew Over the Bridge , was published in 1995.
